End Of An Era

Today the sunsets on an almost 6 year chapter of my life working at AKQA Media. Walking into Ikon Communications back in 2016 I had no idea what to expect. I leave having been enabled to push boundaries, challenge norms and automated much of my job. While having pursued an MBA with distinction, proving to myself that I could finish a business-related degree despite having failed 9 subjects when I first tried.

As this chapter closes for me I leave to take, to take a step out of my comfort zone. A step to challenge what I believe is possible for myself and chasing some dreams.

The Quandamooka Story

The Rotary Club of Wynnum and Manly commissioned the Quandamooka Jetty-Art to mark fifty years of service to its community (1953 - 2003).

Moreton Bay and its many islands are know to its indigenous inhabitants as Quandamooka. Research shows that people have lived in this area for at least 20 000 years.

Moreton Bay has provided food, employment, recreation and a home for countless generations from the original Quandamooka people to all present-day Australians.

Morton Bay is home to a diversity of animal and plant life and is a wetland site of international significance. The unique and ever-changing geography of the bay creates many different habitats that in turn have led to a remarkable biological diversity. Vast areas are now designated as marine park and are also listed under the United Nations Convention of wetlands of international importiance.

The indigenous population probably never exceeded 5000 and although separate tribal and language groups formed, territorial rights and varying customs were respected. The Southern Bay Islands and much of the mainland were the territory of the Koenpul while the Nunukl clan occupied the northern part of Stradbroke Island with the Nughie people on Morton Island (Moorgumpin).

Even though they had had continual contact with European settlers since the 1820s, The Quandamooka people comprise of an identifiable community that has never cease to exist.

The first European settlers to enter Morton Bay were the crew of the sloop “Norfolk” under the command of Lt Matthew Flinders in 1799 but European settlement did not begin in Wynnum and Manly until 60 years later when Crown went on sale.

The soaring timber sculpture commemorates the original timber jetty built in 1882. It was known as the number two jetty (the number one jetty was at Wynnum). The jetty was built to provide access for land buyers of the new residential sites being subdivided from the existing 20 to 25 hectare blocks.

Before construction of the new railway or a trafficable road from Brisbane town, a boat trip down the river and across the bay was the most reliable method of travel.

A fenced swimming closure and change rooms were added later at the head of the jetty on the northern side and was still in use during the 1950s. In the early 1900s bathing was segregated men and women swam on separate days.

William Jolly Bridge

Constructed between 1930 and 1932 the William Jolly (Grey Street) Bridge, is named after Brisbane’s first Lord Mayor William Jolly. Whilst the bridge was originally known as the Grey Street Bridge, it was renamed in July 1955 in memory of William Jolly.

The bridge was constructed by Manuel R. Hornibrook’s company, now part of Lend Lease, for an estimated $840,000 (Information from Baulderstone). In 1996 the bridge was placed on the Queensland Heritage Register. In 2002 the bridge played host to some of the cast of Inspector Gadget 2 as part of the move was filmed on location.

Moffat Beach is named after James Moffat who purchased all the land between Moffat Head and the golf course, northwards from William Street to Cooroora Street in Dicky Beach, in 1882. The beach, is open to adverse weather, and Kings Beach is attractive for holiday-makers. During World War II Moffat Beach had gun emplacements and barbed-wire defences.

Originally constructed between 1882 and 1885, Gold Creek Reservoir (Gold Creek Dam) was built as Brisbane’s second water supply. The dam was originally designed as an unlined chute, the dam wall was damaged during flooding in the early 1890’s and was replaced with the world’s first concrete stepped spillway, which is still in use. The dam was decommissioned in 1991 and now serves in a flood mitigation capacity. This building sits near Gold Creek Dam (Reservoir) spillway.

Located in King George Square, Petrie Tableau commemorates the settlers of Brisbane. Named after Andrew Petrie, who was a builder, architect and Australian pioneer. Petrie and his family where the first free-settlers to move to the area, arriving by boat they landed at King’s Jetty, now know as North Quay, which was the only landing place that existed in Brisbane at the time.

This consideration for climate is the defining characteristic of the Queenslander type.

Kings Beach was named after the King family, the first residents in the area. After living at Moffat Head in James Moffat’s home for a while, they moved to the Kings Beach area in 1893. Within Kings Beach’s boundaries is Wickham Head, a headland off which the hospital ship AHS Centaur is believed to have been sunk by Japanese submarines in 1943.

Founded in 1901 by Irish immigrants Francis McDonnell and Hubert East, “Mac & East” was a large department store in Brisbane which had started business as a drapers. This building was known as the White Store and you can still see in ornamental relief lettering between the first and second storey windows the various departments of the store; “Crockery, Furniture, Bedding, Drapers, Outfitters, Tailors, Importers, Mercers, Dressmakers, Milliners.”

Baxter's Jetty

A timber jetty erected at the mouth of Cabbage Tree Creek c.1880, the Corporation Jetty fell into disrepair and was replaced in 1923. The jetty was for the use of boat owners, fishermen and others frequenting the creek area. Most of the early jetty has disappeared but several concrete blocks remain at the land end. The jetty is known to local residents as Baxter’s Jetty, an association with the Baxter family who settled in the area in the 1860s. John Thomas Baxter purchased lots near the mouth of Cabbage Tree Creek and Jetty Street. He built a cafe with two distinctive gables and operated as a seafood supplier from 1861 trading as “Baxter’s Oyster Saloon”. John Baxter was found drowned near the jetty in 1897.

This 75 meter barge with over 120 tonnes of technical equipment on board has been anchored in the middle of the Brisbane River for the last month! The 3 dancers in the photo are more then 6 meters above the deck of the barge. The water curtain above them is 30 meters above the barge and is more then twice the height of the Victoria Bridge! In total during the Santos GLNG City of Lights display, 380,000 litres of water per minute is pumped through the water jets and water curtain.
